Alcalar Monuments

Few kilometers from Portimão, is the place of Alcalar, where about 5,000 years ago settled and lived an important prehistoric community. Here they established a village defended by walls, trenches and embankments, where they built houses, with which they built an important set of megalithic tombs. The traces found allow us to get closer to their way of life, their activities, the form of occupation and use of this place. Its relationship with death is patent in the forms of construction of the different types of sepulchres, from the collective graves to those specially destined to the chiefs and their relatives. Discovered and explored since the late 19th century, Alcalar's megalithic monuments are classified as a National Monument. In Alcalar, two of these funerary monuments are open to the public and allow direct contact with the processes and materials used in their construction.
